Observation of NGC 6300 : a new bright Compton reflection Dominated Seyfert 2 Galaxy

چکیده
Scanning and pointed RXTE observations of the nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 6300 reveal that it is a source of hard X-ray continuum and large equivalent width Fe Kα emission. These properties are characteristic of Compton-reflection dominated Seyfert 2 galaxies. The continuum can be modeled as Compton-reflection; subsolar iron abundance is required and a high inclination preferred. However, the poor energy resolution of RXTE means that this description is not unique, and the continuum can also be modeled using a “dual absorber”, i.e. a sum of absorbed power laws. Observations with higher energy resolution detectors will cleanly discriminate between these two models. Optical observations support the Compton-reflection dominated interpretation as LX/L[OIII] is low. NGC 6300 is notable because with F2−10 ≈ 6.4× 10 −12 ergs cm−2 s−1, it is the second brightest such object known. ASCA observations of type-2 Seyfert Galaxies: II The Importance of X-ray Scattering and Reflection
We discuss the importance of X-ray scattering and Compton reflection in type-2 Seyfert Galaxies, based upon the analysis of ASCA observations of 25 such sources. Consideration of the iron Kα, [Oiii] line and X-ray variability suggest that NGC 1068, NGC 4945, NGC 2992, Mrk 3, Mrk 463E and Mrk 273 are dominated by reprocessed X-rays. We examine the properties of these sources in more detail. We f...
متن کاملExtreme X - ray spectral variability in the Seyfert 2 Galaxy NGC 1365
We present multiple Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of the type 1.8 Seyfert Galaxy NGC 1365, which shows the most dramatic X-ray spectral changes observed so far in an AGN: the source switched from reflection dominated to transmission dominated and back in just 6 weeks. During this time the soft thermal component, arising from a ∼ 1 kpc region around the center, remained constant. The refle...

Using the BeppoSAX observatory, we have observed a nearby LINER/Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC 3079, which is known as an outflow galaxy and a bright H2O-maser source. Using the PDS detector, we have revealed that the NGC 3079 nucleus suffers from a Compton-thick absorption, with a hydrogen column density ∼ 10 cm. After corrected the absorption, the 2–10 keV luminosity becomes 10 erg s at a distance of ...
متن کاملAn RXTE Observation of the Seyfert 1 Galaxy MCG − 6 - 30 - 15 : X - ray Reflection and the Iron Abundance
We report on a 50 ks observation of the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG−6-30-15 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. The data clearly show the broad fluorescent iron line (equivalent width ∼ 250 eV), and the Compton reflection continuum at higher energies. A comparison of the iron line and the reflection continuum has enabled us to constrain reflective fraction and the elemental abundances in the ...
متن کامل1 y 2 , Elemental Abundances in NGC 3516
We present Reflection Grating Spectrometer data from an XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3516, taken while the continuum source was in an extremely low flux state. This observation offers a rare opportunity for a detailed study of emission from a Seyfert 1 galaxy as these are usually dominated by high nuclear continuum levels and heavy absorption. The spectrum shows numerous n...
